'Lady Bird' Review

'Lady Bird' Review - 7/10

Lady Bird, directed and written by Greta Gerwig, has all the assets of a normal teenage, ‘coming of age’ film, yet making it a super realistic movie which focuses on a normal teenage girl that doesn’t like her hometown Sacramento. Of course, by the end she realises how dear it is to her heart and how New York isn’t that great, as her first night there ends up in a disaster. Christine, the real name of the character decides to name herself ‘Lady Bird’ and later even makes a reference to why saying ‘People will call each other by names their parents made up for them but they won’t believe in God.’ , and then by the end of the film she decides that she wants to go with Christine again.

Something that I has always hated about teen movies, is that the teens in it aren’t actually teens but fully grown adults, nevertheless, Saoirse Ronan actually looks 17/18 in the film despite being 23 years old in real life. The other teens such as ‘Julie’ (played by Beanie Feldstein) and Jenna (played by Odeya Rush) also look like teenagers, which is a surprise as Jenna is the ‘popular’ school girl, which is usually a role that is super sexualised, so thank you Greta Gerwig for not doing that.

The themes in the film are not just based on a confused girl that wants to be popular, cool and no longer a virgin, but real life themes such as social class, which is the biggest theme in the movie, as ‘Lady Bird’s’ family is low income, she goes to a catholic school with a scholarship which means that the majority of the students are upper class, with Range Rover cars and big mansions with pools in the backyard, which to an influential 17 year old is a massive issue as she lives on the ‘wrong side of the tracks’. Another recurring theme which is not as obvious is that the film was set in 2002/2003 so the lack of technology in High School makes such a difference as there is no such thing as cyber bullying or selfies or obnoxious little kids who have dreams of being a social media star, which makes the film way more bearable than other recent teen movies.

The onscreen relationship of mother/daughter between ‘Lady Bird’ and Marion (played by Laurie Metcalf) is something that I have never really seen before in a movie, it reminded me of my own relationship with my Mother. It was just so realistic, films don’t really show how tough mothers can be with there daughters, just because they care about them so much, and it’s great that ‘Lady Bird’ never hates her mother, and knows herself that it is out of love and not hatred.

Overall, I enjoyed this teen movie; it was fun, playful, real and not too much of cliché. Saoirse Ronan’s performance was truly great, and it makes complete sense that she won a Golden Globe. The rest of the cast was also very well picked and very well played. This is the film I have seen that was directed by Greta Gerwig, and I really liked it!
